About DuranTunes

Beginning on the 1st of May, 2016, I conceived the DuranTunes blog for a simple purpose: I plan to write a detailed discussion of every song ever recorded by the English band Duran Duran. This includes all the songs from their studio albums, their singles, the vast majority of their B-sides and bonus tracks, and a handful of other songs.

I won’t be sticking to a strict schedule; I will only write about a song whenever I feel sufficiently inspired to do so. I aim for at least one post per day, but depending on time constraints or my current mood, there may be as few as one new post every week. Hopefully, the DuranTunes project will be completed within a year, give or take a couple of months. Each song will be selected at random, and the length of each write-up will vary with how much I can extract from a given song.

With their strong songwriting credentials, iconic videos, loyal fanbase and intriguing history, I’ve been captivated by Duran Duran for a while now. What’s most admirable is that the band are still together in spite of cruel treatment from the critics, a changing line-up, and a number of personal problems over the years. They remain, in my opinion, a highly underrated group of talented musicians who are only recently getting the respect they so rightly deserve. People often ignorantly assume they’re nothing more than an insipid boy band that won the hearts of teenage girls and became irrelevant after their third album. This could not be further from the truth, and this blog is intended to eradicate that false image.

Having gained a rough outline of Duran Duran’s sound through Greatest and loving every second of it, it wasn’t long before I introduced myself to the rest of their catalogue and was surprised at how creative and innovative their music could get. Some songs I love, some bring back pleasant memories, and some I’m not terribly keen on, but all in all it’s been a fascinating aural journey, details of which I hope to incorporate into my blog posts. Usually, when the music of Duran Duran is critiqued, only the obvious hit singles are ever brought up. Here, I wish to explore the entire spectrum of Duran Duran’s output and help bring the lesser-known material to attention. There is so much more to Duran Duran than “Hungry Like The Wolf” or “Save A Prayer,” believe me.
